"In such a situation as in Russia with Prigozhin, no one will come to defend the government" — Tsikhanovskaya

If there was such a situation as in Russia with Prigozhin, no one would come to defend the government," — Tsikhanovskaya.

The leader of the Democratic Party Svetlana Tsikhanovskaya did not rule out protests in Belarus in the event of the death of Alexander Lukashenko and the attempt to appoint his successor. She stated this in an interview with DW.

"Only fair and free elections, when political prisoners are released, can change the political situation in the country. Among them are many leaders whom Belarusians want to see as their president."

Tsikhanovskaya also believes that the regime is "less consolidated than it seems. It may seem that everyone is loyal, but the system is built on fear, and people want to get rid of this fear, and mainly the regions are ruled by technocrats, who at the time of change will say that they have always been for democratic Belarus".

Leader also expressed an opinion about the propaganda narrative that in the event of a change of power in Belarus, those who worked with Lukashenka will be persecuted and "hanged on poles."

"Those who committed serious crimes against Belarusians will be punished, because there must be rule of law," said the politician. Regarding the others, she said: “We all want to live in one country and work in this country for its benefit. That's why everyone will be needed."

She is sure that the way out of the crisis can be the appearance in power of a person who will offer to negotiate. By this, Tsikhanovskaya means the release of political prisoners and the beginning of an investigation into the regime's crimes.
